Becket, MA

Becket, MA was established back in 1765 in an effort to make a wilderness trail that connected the lower Housatonic Valley with the Connecticut Valley and Boston safer to travel. In its early days Becket, MA had a population of only a few, only about 414 residents in 1776, but now the town has around 1700 residents. Becket is loved by fisherman because it has one of the best trout streams in the Berkshires and Western Massachusetts. It is also home to Jacobs Pillow Dance and the Becket Arts Center.

Jacob’s Pillow

Grounded in both hardscrabble Yankee roots and ancient terpsichorean tradition, Jacob’s Pillow is known far and wide as one of the most important cultural landmarks for dance. Visitors will not see Jacob (an obscure Biblical reference) or a Pillow (a nickname for the large, glacier scarred rocks), but they will see The Dance as it is presented nowhere else in the world. Ted Shawn, the noted modern dancer, bought the 18th century farm in 1930 to rehearse his Denishawn dance company, touring the US with his unique folk and ethnic approach to dance, eschewing staid European mannerisms and trying to educate a whole country about the possibilities of dance. Among the troupe were such legends as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Barton Mumaw and Charles Weidman.
