Jacob’s Pillow

Grounded in both hardscrabble Yankee roots and ancient terpsichorean tradition, Jacob’s Pillow is known far and wide as one of the most important cultural landmarks for dance. Visitors will not see Jacob (an obscure Biblical reference) or a Pillow (a nickname for the large, glacier scarred rocks), but they will see The Dance as it is presented nowhere else in the world. Ted Shawn, the noted modern dancer, bought the 18th century farm in 1930 to rehearse his Denishawn dance company, touring the US with his unique folk and ethnic approach to dance, eschewing staid European mannerisms and trying to educate a whole country about the possibilities of dance. Among the troupe were such legends as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Barton Mumaw and Charles Weidman.
