Stockbridge, MA has grown a lot since its incorporation in 1739. Originally an Indian mission, the town has changed into a versatile town that serves as a resort for tourists. It was after the railroad arrived in 1850 that Stockbridge became a summer resort for the wealthy. Many of the “Berkshire Cottages” (large mansions built by the wealthy) were built during this era. Stockbridge, MA has a history as being an art colony. Many great artists thrived there and some of their works are still on display there. You can visit Chesterwood, the home and studio of sculptor Daniel Chester French and the Norman Rockwell Museum.
