Ted Shawn, the noted modern dancer, bought the 18th century farm in 1930 to rehearse his Denishawn dance company, touring the US with his unique folk and ethnic approach to dance, eschewing staid European mannerisms and trying to educate a whole country about the possibilities of dance. Among the troupe were such legends as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Barton Mumaw and Charles Weidman.
