Washington, MA was first settled in 1760 and officially incorporated in 1777. Before it was officially named for George Washington, the town had several different names, including Greenoch, Watsontown and Hartville. It is a mountainous Berkshire town that is home to five small lakes, a number of streams and many clear springs. It is home to folk singer Arlo Gurthrie and singer/songwriter James Taylor. The town of Washington, MA remains a small rural community.
